Compost

I'm looking to buying more compost and not sure which one would be best. Last year I got it from homebase and was pleased no problems. Brought it again this year and am very dissapointed with it as it has some many bits in it almost like bark. Planted spring onion seeds in pots last year they done fantastic, this year nothing they are not growing at all. Same with all my herbs.
I was thinking of buying grow bags and using that instead
Any ideas please

The B & Q one in the purple bag seems to have been the most highly recommended on here, which I bought some. No complaints about the quality, but do remember to give the bag a good beating to loosen the contents before you open the bag. highly therapeutic too

Have to agree about the homebase compost its really poor quality. I bought a 120l bag for growing veg from seed and topping up raised beds. I ended up taking it all out the beds to use for potato sacks instead, so of the seeds have germinated I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for the rest as the compost has now gone a funny green colour! I've replaced the stuff in the beds with the westland multi purpose with added John Innes (its on offer at Homebase) much better, as you expect compost to be, not the bark chipping I had before!!!

I got mine from poundland and although at first it was barky in texture i sieved and banged the bag about and it is now fine in texture.
So far all my seedlings are doing really well and have had no problems.

Whichever brand you get remember that there is usually enough feed mixed in for about 4 weeks, after that you should feed regularly.

Dont get it from asda. I got two bags for £6 and it's full of what looks like unrotted grass and not like any compost I bought before.

Thank you for that post, I was thinking of getting the 2 for £6 ones from Asda myself, won't bother now. We have already bought, and used, four bags from B&Q: the 70l bags for £3.98. So far no complaints, happy with the quality/texture, and seems to me a decent amount for the money.

Wickes for me too I did a thread on the gardening about J Arthur Bowers seed compost that when i opened it it had lots of unbreakable hard lumps and when i complained to them the reply said it was because of Goverment guidlines about how much peat they can use so they are using more "Green Material" like bark and twigs. They also said they would not be using that supplier again, perhaps the likes of homebase and asda buy from the same supplier

John Innis is just a set of guidelines for the constituents that a compost has to include and their ratio's. The rest of the mix is down to the manufacturer as to what they include.
