Santander rubbish vs barclays crooks

I have had loads of problems with Santander/Abbey so thought I would try moving my business account to a different bank and chose Barclays as they already deal with my mortgage.
Things seemed fine at first and although you do pay a little for business banking they have a branch in my home town and hopefully won't be as useless as Abbey.
I was in there one day and talking to the cashier and happened to mention I had to pay my annual Inland Revenue bill very soon. She replied that I could do this over the counter in the branch so I agreed and didn't think anything more about it. However when I next got a statement I discovered that the bank had charged me £40 for that ONE transaction and she had not told me it would cost anything. I was also completely in credit. To rub salt in the wound I heard that very day that the CEO of Barclays was going to pick up £60,000,000 in bonuses. He will never get any more of my money. I have closed my account and gone back to the useless but free Santander.

  • It is more an error by the staff member as oppossed to Barclays being 'crooks'. Im not sure what wage the CEO gets has any bearing on matters. Anyway im sure where you work customers could equally say how rubbish the firm is etc.

Did it not occur, whilst you were authorising it, that a CHAPS transaction is costly? In particular to HMRC, who accept virtually every other type of payment.

I have paid it at the post office before and it was free? If the cashier had said to me 'you can pay it here, mind you it could be quite expensive' then obviously I would have done it elsewhere. Maybe she did not know it would cost me but she should have done.

Clearing House Automated Payments ....... it's what you use if you want to guarantee payment that day. Typically used by Solicitors to move money relating to house purchases. But also received in huge values by HMRC around the 31st Jan SA due date.

    Usual cost from a current account £25 - £30. Possibly £40 because it's from a business account?

Pay by one-off Direct Debit (if you file your SA online - you set it up from your online account) ......... or use BillPay (same mechanism or link from HMRC site) via your Debit Card (not Credit card or there's a 1.25% charge) - in future. Both free / very safe and you can pay right up (you select the date on the DD) to the due date.
