How do I help my friend?

A small update on my friends situation. I was at her house on Thursday when she recieved a phone call. I could tell by the questions she had to answer (DOB, postcode etc) before they would speak to her that it was a debt collection department. She kept saying "I am going to pay it off soon" and then she put the phone down abruptly. She was in tears when she came off the phone. I then tried to talk to her, but she said everything was fine.
I am now convinced the debt must be getting on top of her. This week again I saw more evidence of her continued spending, a new dining room table and she has been buying new clothes for her holiday (about 3 carrier bags full).
I have tried, but she refuses to listen. I am just so upset again by it all and I feel so helpless.0 -
helpafriend,
it seems like she is close to having to deal with it. Just let her know that when she's ready, you're there. You can't do any more.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
I agree with everyone you cant do any more than you have done.
I must stick up for your freind in the way that I too was always maxed out a day after payday, and I too believed debt was normal, until I found this place.
With the wolf at the door, most of us know you can only run so far. with secured loans and mortgage maxed, there really is little leverage.
ON a more positive note, at least they have stuff to sell when the sh -t hits the proverbial fan, which is more than some posters here have
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Totally agree with everyone - you can't do more than you already have. You sound like the kind of friend anybody would be delighted and grateful to have.
Maybe send a little card saying you're there for her no matter what and give her the address of this site. She might be more ready to think about it and have a look at MSE in private rather than when you're facing her. It sounds like it could be getting to the point where she has to face facts, but isn't quite ready to admit she has a problem....but some quiet reflection time might help.
Well done for your efforts.0
