Would neighbour's smashed window put you off dream house?

The road may be fine, but having a bad neighbour could spoil that particular house for you. You could summon up your courage, knock on the door of the uncared-for house, and introduce yourselves. 'Hi, we're going to be your new neighbours across the road." See what happens.
Speak to some other neighbours too.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

When I went to see my house I bought 4 years ago the house next door had a sign saying mad house and curtains that were always shut. Its a lovely little road in a nice area I dropped by the road at different times of the day and it was always quiet so I bought the house.
I moved in and then discovered they were dealing. Cars would come down all hours of the night, "friends" seemed to live there. There would be big rows normally in the early hours and being a terrace house you would be woken up - when its 4.30 am and you have to be up a few hours later its not great. House parties most weekends, music played to the early hours.
The final straw was rats in my garden coming under the fence, I found that there was 40 plus black bin liners in there garden. The local council were involved and they were evicted.
I would never do it again, talk to neighbours I did but only when I moved in and it was too late. But since they have gone it has been the nicest place to live everyone looks out for each other and everyone want to chat.0 -
It would be put me off I'm afraid. Keep revisiting as others have said but I wouldn't want to live anywhere that has a run down house next to me.
You just don't know what goes on there. I can safely say we live in a nice rural village but we have a number of problems at least 2 weekends in the month from anti-social behavior....(thankfully ours is rented) and it isn't great when you can't sleep 2 nights in a row or until the early hours because of it.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Streetview is a wonderful tool when looking for houses.
Im currently looking to move house and have been using Streetview to check out the areas Im looking at. Ive discounted some for having smashed windows in the street.
I live in an area badly affected by antisocial behaviour, and it puts me right off. Might not even have been because of ASB but I dont care - window out = big no no for me.Weight loss November 09-January 10: [STRIKE]13lbs[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]20lbs[/STRIKE] 27lbs! :j0 -

Just remember though sometimes the behaviour doesn't get reported. We once reported some drunken oaths have wheelie bins races down our street at some unearthly hour in the morning and the police didn't think it was that important and wanted us to stay up and make a statement. As the youths were likely to be gone by the time they got themselves here (being a rural area) we decided not to proceed as we just wanted to get back to bed and sleep.
So be aware that the police may not know what is going on....0 -
i think you have your answer, by the fact you are asking0

You really can't be too careful, not only is it a big financial investment for you, it is your future quality of life that is at stake. I would agree with others who have said talk to neighbours, you really need to know what it is like to live there. The house may be nice but if the neighbours are a problem it will make your life hell. Always go for the worst house on the best street is good advice imo. Good luck.0

Is the house at the expected price or does it seem a good price for the area? Maybe the owner is prepared to sell it at a lower price so they can get away, hence lots of interest from buyers in it?
I would need to investigate further, just in caseMortgage Total: £53,041 / £75,000
