Renting a flat in Copenhagen

Hi All,

I know this forum focuses on UK moneysaving, but I need help!

I'm going to move to Copenhagen on July 1st for a year - I've been offered a one year post there.

I'm desperately trying to find a flat to rent there, but so far encountering some difficulties, so I was hoping some lovely person/people here might have some answers/advice!

I can't seem to find that many places offered for rent on websites - I've used 'justlanded.com' and 'expatriates.com' primarily, as they are in English. I've also browsed dba.dk, which is the website of a danish newspaper, and therefore in Danish... thank goodness for Google translate!

So far, I can't seem to find any consistency in the number of bedrooms - an advert saying 'two bedrooms' can mean: 'two actual bedrooms, plus a living room, kitchen and bathroom' or it can mean 'one bedroom, and one other miscellaneous living space - living room/dining room/study, plus kitchen and bathroom'. I understand from a friend that this is not unusual, but it is slowing the process down a lot! Particularly for adverts that don't have pictures...
Has anyone got any advice on how to search more effectively? Particularly, which websites should I use? Should I use letting agents' websites?

Also, the responses I have had all appear to be from scammers: they've all said 'I need you to do a Western Union transfer before i can let you reserve/view/know anything more about the flat'. Obviously i won't do this, but it's frustrating that every time I get to the point of thinking I've found a possibility, it turns out to be a scam. I've just had one response saying she couldn't send me photos, nor could I view the flat, but did I want to rent it anyway' :(.

If anyone knows a good way to find a flat to rent in Copenhagen, and some good websites (is there a Danish equivalent to Gumtree?) to look on, I'd be so grateful.

Thanks,
xx

What have other work collegues done when they have worked there? Can you not ask around? If you are at Uni, then your Uni may give you a hand getting somewhere sorted.

Or alternatively you could fly out there for a couple of days (return flights are from £110) and trawlling round the letting agents and looking at flats. If you do this you get to see what the area you are renting in is like.

Thanks Mum of Three, but I had actually thought of these things - the Uni in Copenhagen has very little advice to offer, and I don't want to just turn up there with no viewings scheduled, as that's a bit of a gamble to take, not knowing the system.

Does anyone have any experience of actually moving to/living in CH?
    Thanks.
