Care of external timber cladding

Ok, I'll just call it timber 'cladding' for easiness sake!
The current finish is peeling badly. What sort of external paint/finish would I be looking at putting on next?

Anyone have cladding who can recommend something?

Thanks in advance!

to do it properly, burn the old paint off. give it a quick rub down.
2 x coats of undercoat with decent oil based paint. 1 top coat of good quality gloss paint. (oil based).
the present weather is the perfect time to do it too.
    Get some gorm.

Ha, it was snowing here yesterday!!

I'm not sure burning the old paint off is an option, when I say 'cladding' what I really mean is swedish timber 3 bed semi

OH is going to hand strip as best as he can then refinish. Some houses have oil based looking stuff and others have what appears to be just woodstain, not sure what to put on for the best. Its oil based thats peeling off just now but I'm pretty sure that stuffs been on for the last 25yrs!

I think we need to sandblast it eventually and have it properly done but due to no cash we just need a quick fix make sure its weather tight at the mo.

Very bad and counter productive I know but don't know what else to do?? Apart from buy a house made of bricks next time :D

Never never put gloss paint on outside cladding. With time the paint will peel off, crack and the task to repair will be mammoth.

Instead use an oil based tint that will fade off and can just be re-applied in due course.

I have used timber cladding on my garage roof and am using engine oil of the cheapest brand at Wilkinson to protect it.

We have quite a lot of timber in various places on our house, we use Butinox No.1 on all our timber. It is really intended for use on sawn timber, but we find it penetrates better and doesn't really leave much of a build up on the surface to peel. It is not cheap, but does go quite a long way. It comes in several different tints.

In Scandinavia they use a lot of woodstain type products on the houses and have developed a good range of finishes suitable for different timbers and situations. Butinox is popular in Norway.

You can get similar British products, but we have not found them to be as long-lasting.

You will however need to spend a good deal time preparing the surface properly, or you will just be wasting your money.

I am having the cladding ion the outside of my house done as we speak, it was last done about 8 years ago so it was time for a new coat. We use the johnstones stain/oil based one. Its 53.00 for 5 litres and my house needed 2 tins. The woodstain stuff is really meant for fences and sheds so its worth buying this stuff as it goes on aand dries slightly plasticky looking. They dont sell it in B@Q or the other diy stores we had to go directly to Johnstones shop itself.
