Selling your car...test drive insurance
Options
When selling your car do you insist that the potential buyer has adequate insurance if they want to test drive it or do you just take the risk. How many of you actually demand to see proof of insurance, and should you also ask to see a drivers licence? Bearing in mind the asking price of the vehicle would be over £10K.

Best to add it to your own insurance, Most buyers insurance will only cover them 3rd party in the event of an accident.
Your car will not be covered, Add an any driver to your policy.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
What about ID, drivers licence etc, anyone asked for these and what sort of response did you get from the potential buyer.0

Bear in mind that most motor policies exclude theft by deception eg they ask for a test drive and as you walk around the car to get in they drive off (It's quite common).
A lot of motor traders will ask for the sight of a utility bill and a driving licence.
A good idea is to take an additional person (Friend) with you to sit in the rear passenger seat to help reduce the chance of a distraction theft0 -
I haven't sold a car for years so I don't have the problem. However if I turned up and the seller started messing around I thinkwould just say thanks but no thanks.0

It is the owners lawful responsibility to ensure the vehicle is driven legally. If you do not check that the buyer has a valid licence and at least 3rd party cover YOU can be prosecuted if stopped.
If they cause an accident you will be in it up to your neck!
Many insurance policies the buyer may well have will include 3rd party cover on someone elses car. Drive them somewhere quiet and safe (take a friend for safety). Get out taking the keys with you get in the passenger seat, hand them the key and let them have a drive. Usually this is fine.0
