Laptop is EXTREMELY slow even after formatting!

    Your hard drive is probably fine.

    Put the battery back in, does it go slow again?

    If so, you either need a new battery, or need to disable microsoft's battery monitoring software in device manager - click on batteries, look for microsoft acpi client control method, right click and disable. The laptop should now work with the battery in, but you will lose the power icon, and its associated management features - the battery may still work for a short time, but you won't get a warning when it is about to die on battery power, so best to run it on the mains as well.
