Overdraft debt

Options
Please help, my father recently passed away suddenly and he had a joint bank account with my mother which included an overdraft and a creditcard. We wrote to the bank as my mother is unable to pay the overdraft due to illness and the bank wrote back and confirmed they would write the debt off.
Now she has been receiving letters from the bank regarding charges etc, when we contacted the bank, after further investigation the bank then confirmed that they had put the wrong account number on the letter and the should have put the creditcard number on the letter and were therefore NOT writing off the debt. Although nothing has been received in writing confirming this. Surely they cannot chop and change there mind, where should be go from here? Is there a template?

I don't think there is a template but I'd certainly complain about the way they've handled what must already be a stressful time.

If you don't get any joy with the bank don't be afraid to go to the Ombudsmen or a debt advice charity like CAB or national debtline, for some reason banks listen to them more than people. Even when the figures used are identical.

The bank have made an error so they should be able to deal with a payment plan with her and refund any charges that their error caused, ie the date the letter was received since that would be reasonable in these circumstances.
How much was owed on the credit card that was written off?

  • Many thanks for this, the creditcard amount was for under £1000.
