Yes, Ebay is Brilliant

I have been selling on Ebay for quite a while, and contrary to many threads on here, I think it is brilliant.
I have had several thousand happy customers, a few not so happy, its fun and very profitable.

Ebay is brilliant because it has the customers. It ultimately comes down to what you make of it, success on ebay will not just happen on its own. There is a lot of personal work that is involved so ebay can't take all the credit.0

Ever since I started using eBay, I've had nothing but good words for it.
Sold my old crap and picked up a few bargains, which I wouldn't have been able to get in the shops at the price I've paid.0 -
it will eventually get boringneed to have a lightbulb moment0

Ebay is a criminal's paradise.0

I love eBay, but it's far from perfect. I could make several criticisms if I could be bothered right now. That said, I've sold stuff for £s that would have made pennies at a car boot sale, and bought some great bargains too.0

Hi Guys, can anyone out there give some advice please?
I have bought and sold a few bits on e-bay over the last year or so. I am also selling books on amazon. I would like to set up an ebay shop to sell some bits that I have collected. I can see the link on the site to set up a shop but thought I would pick your brains for any tips etc before I take the plunge. What are the advantages of the shops? Are they worth the effort? I am a bit ignorant of the new 'make me an offer' tab can someone also explain that please.
Any tips etc would be appreciated.
Thanks guys:rolleyes:0 -
Personally, eBay is not all that great. I've experienced people (from Nigeria in particular) trying to scam me, items I've been auctioning going for less than other items in the same categories and paying fees before I've even sold the item.
eBay is okay if you wnat to sell low-value items, but if you want to sell high-value items, such as laptops, then it isn't worth it. and who really believes that all the Patek Philippe and tag watches are genuine.
People might make money, but how much have they paid in fees?

I've sold stuff that I was going to throw away and bought stuff cheaper than I could find anywhere else or that I would otherwise not be able to get in the shops, so I think it's good.Nothing to see here, move along.0

Hi Annie, I know that you've been on your hols so you've missed a few threads about how ebay have put the fees up for shop sales, so you might want to go back a few pages and read what's been said.
I have had an ebay shop since they started about 4 years ago (apart from a 6 month break) and I find it worth the fees, even though they've gone up a little bit.
I sell china and antique collectables, I always auction them first as that is the best way to get the best price for them then if they don't sell I hold them back for a month or so then re-list as an auction. If they don't sell 2nd time then I'll put them in the ebay shop with a higher price than I really want for them because of the best offer feature - this means your buyer can offer what they want to pay for the item and you can choose to accept or decline this offer.
You pay a subscription fee of £6 per month so you have to keep your shop full to make sure that your sales will cover this fee.
Ebay have altered how they show your listings in searches - if there are a lot of listings for the same item they won't show them all as the pages were getting clogged up but if you are selling collectables there might not be too many listed so you'll always have your goods on show so this new idea hasn't affected me.
The big advantage of a shop is the cheap listing fee - you pay 8p per 30 days, this is for the listing and gallery (the gallery is just shown when the buyer goes to your shop, they they can see photos of all your listings both the auction and shop items). I use Auctiva.com to list so I have free supersized photos so 8p is the most I pay, if you use ebay pix then it will cost you more.
They best way to use the shop is to have auctions running at all times so that you can point to your shop items in all of your descriptions and hope that they look at all your goods, you can do fancy things with the colours and display of your shop and have things like a mailing list to send flyers to customers that are happy to receive them.
And, yes -going back to the original post -ebay IS brilliant, I've been ebaying for getting on for 7 years with over 5500 transactions and never had any bother, it all comes down what kind of things you sell and buy, nobody has tried to pull a fast one on me when buying a 70 year old teapot!0 -
I LURVE EBAY!
