BMW 1 SERIES clutch judder

Bought an 05 1 series 2 weeks ago with 35000 on the clock and have now noticed a judder when the car is warm and in traffic, took it to a BMW specialist who tell me that it needs a new clutch and flywheel. Took it back to the garage from where it was bought who told me there was nothing wrong with the clutch and if there was it was to be expected from a car of that age and mileage and infomed me they wouldn't repair it under the warranty. Any one out there with any advice on the next step? Not sure if they were just fobbing me off as I am a woman.

Hmmm was it from a BMW main dealer?

I'd argue the car is faulty and therefore not fit for purpose although the usual people on here will insist it's a consumable item and therefore you should expect it to fail

sounds like the dual mass flywheel is worn

the garage is probably trying to fob you off due to the cost of repair unfortunatly a worn clutch or flywheel is subject to wear and tear i think the best you can hope for is a goodwill payment from the garage

No not from a main dealer but would you expect a cluth to be replaced at 35k?

Well Vauxhall only warrant a clutch for 18,500 miles, I don't know about BMW.

I wouldn't expect a clutch to need replacing on a car I bought two weeks ago, though.
  • Well no, paid over 8500 for it and expected it to run for a while without it costing me money. Have the name of the dealer principle and will make a complaint and see what happens.

Welcome to the world of modern diesels, sorry...!

And yes, it will be the Dual Mass Flywheel.

While the gearbox is out, we always put a new clutch in.

    vibration when pulling away/changing gear
    vibration through clutch pedal
    knocking noise on idle.

The car may only have low mileage but that can often be worse for a clutch/flywheel as a car sat on the motorway doing big miles will hardly change gear whereas a car spent nipping round town will be up and down through the gears so more wear on the clutch assembly.

Its when pulling away at junctions and when in traffic especially when its warm.
