All UK airports can re-open from 2200 BST, the Transport Secretary Lord Adonis has said. Lord Adonis made the statement after consultation with the Civil Aviation Authority and a reassessment of the risk to aircraft from volcanic ash.
Some restrictions will remain in place, but they will be much smaller than those enforced under the current ban.
Lord Adonis said after the ban was lifted it would be up to airlines to bring flight schedules back on track.

Hence why most of them have been conducting their own test flights today in preperation for this - sky news are implying that the airlines knew about this when the decision was made this afternoon0

I am so pleased to hear this news as my DD is stuck in majorca, she is rebooked on flight for thursday night . Just wonder how long it will take to get flights back to normal.TOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T0

I saw thomsons & ba done test flights, not sure any smaller airlines have.
Hope this starts to resolve now and we can all get away/home.:money: giving me & my darling boys a better cheaper life

I don't think they need to do test flights, but they have to carry out engine inspections after every flight. That might be a problem for airlines with short turn rounds like Ryanair and Easyjet.0

Yes I think thats what they will do, longer turnaround times is much better than being stranded, safety first for most (hopefully!):money: giving me & my darling boys a better cheaper life

Well at least it's a start, going to take a while to get things back to normal I think, I think I would be very nervous getting on a plane tonight though. But that's just me - a big wimp.0

Wonder who's going to cop for this - current met office etc ash maps are worse now than they were at the back end of last week, but apparently all is now safe..?0
