Stuff I need to get rid of, not sure where!

I have to trim down my belongings as Im moving out of my parents house and into a small place with my girlfriend. I have the following but not sure what to do with them other than take them to the tip, any ideas?!

1. Large collection of FHM, Mens Health and Total Guitar magazines.

2. Old computer bits like 2 cases, a hard disk, a cd drive, a fan...not a whole machine.

3. A broken LCD monitor, backlight is broken.

4. Large CD collection - could slim down but cds seem to sell for nothing on ebay.

5. Huge collection of books could slim that down too, but ebay seems too time consuming.

Any inspiring ideas or recycling tips for these items?

  • If you have a car, I suggest a car boot sale. Some CDs sell OK on eBay, so you might want to check the completed listings for any which you have which have sold well. For the computer bits, probably Freecycle. Charity shops will take most of the other stuff.

Books - could try as a single job lot on eBay, or may be BookMooch - a site for swapping books ...

    site here http://www.bookmooch.com/

CD's - single job lot on eBay, archive them onto a hard disk as mp3,wma or ogg files

LCD monitor - have you looked into repairing this, if it's similar to laptop screens it may just be a new backlight or inverter required

Magazines - scan any useful bits and save as PDF files
  • Hi,

I agree with #2 about carboots for the books and CDs unless there are some that are of particular interest - my measure for selling a book or CD is to look at Amazon's Market Place and if I can buy it there dirt cheap (prices can be 1p plus P&P!) I don't bother trying to sell on line.

Try cqout.com for the magazines as it is free to list and they have (eBay have just said this week on the message boards they don't want this kind of item 'cluttering up' eBay). If the hard drive, etc., are working then they are worth listing on an auction site provided you can provide the technical information - but how quickly do you need to sell? Quickly - then list on eBay and cross your fingers you get a good price. Not bothered - the list on eBid or cqout where there are no listing/relisting fees, no minimum reserve and no or low sale fees.

Personally I now only use eBay for items I know I can make a decent amount on because of the high fees - I use eBid for most other stuff.

More often than not eBid comes up before eBay these days on search engines like Google and Yahoo so it is worth thinking about.

If you don't want to sell some of the things, why not offer them on freecycle?
That way you do someone a favour, and clear out unwanted items :)

Hi. For the less mainstream items QXL are good and have slightly lower fees than eBay. You could also try Gumtree for larger items or items you want to sell locally, as that site is completely free. Do beware of scams there though, hence again why it's better for local sales.

    Cheers and take care.

Pookie, you appear to be advertising this site on several threads and if you have a connection with the site at all can I please ask that you move your referral to the referral board having read the regulations for posting on there.

If not, I apologise but would point out it can hardly 'look good' when there is virtually nothing being swapped and no real history to the site. For sellers it would also seem more expensive than ebay as it says:

Make an offer for FREE, or add your own swap for as little as 50p.
Swap anything you want, from Items to skills
whereas most of my items on ebay are listed for less than 50p complete with a gallery pic.

However all auctions, swap sites etc are welcome on this forum, we get several new sites a year and they are always worth a look.

  • #7 I've only just heard of Gumtree and was thinking of using it. How have scammers used it? I thought because it was based on locality it would have been more secure?
