Cancelled payment protection but cancelled card

in Credit cards
I have/had a credit card (that i dont use, only paying it off now) with my bank and contacted them last week to cancel the payment protection as i dont use the card and im paying it off now, so the lady on the phone said thats fine we will write to confirm this. I have recieved the letter saying the payment protection has been removed. Yesterday i check my internet banking and the credit card was no longer showing my account, so left it a day incase it was a computer error there end. So checked today and its still not there so i called the customer service number to find out what was going on........said to the staff that it no longer shows in my internet banking and wondering why, he said he can not see it as well so its been removed from my account and that i only have my 2 current accounts left.
now do i leave it as that and its a bank error they cancelled it? or do i call them back saying i should still have a account there with money outstanding?
im in two minds really, i could easly leave it and if they write to me in the next few months about it ill call them and explain the situation and that when i called they did not have any records of it and then carry on as normal with payments, do i call them back today and say they are wrong? but who am i to argue with a banks computer system or staff?

Quite frankly my dear, I don't believe you. Nor do I give a damn.0

Ok so why would i post this up here??? and if u dont care why did u post here?
Its a completely serious question! the bank say they have no knowledge of the card and thats why its not showing on the system or my internet banking?0 -
Does sound too good to be true but do you have current statements? If the bank is saying that they don't have any knowledge of the card, write to them with a copy of the statement.
Also I take it that you were sold the PPI with full knowledge of what it was? Otherwise you could have claimed.0 -
Dont have any current statements have paperless so only do it all online and well cant see it now!
Well i dont use the card anymore dont even have a card for the account its just a paying it off account now
So do you think i should tell them about the mistake or wait and see what happens?0 -
I think you would be wrong to assume the account is now closed.
First of all, do you pay by direct debit? - If so, wait until the DD is next due and see if it is taken - if it is taken, that will show that the bank are still keeping the account active, even if it doesn't show up on an initial search.
Secondly, if there is an outstanding balance and the account is still active, it will be racking up interest charges and, possibly, deafulted payment charges which, at worst, will come back to haunt you at some indeterminate date in the future or, at best, will involve you in a great deal of hassle going through all the account history again.
Personally, I would write to the bank, recorded delivery, with a history of what has happened and asking them to confirm the current status of the account. That way, it places the onus on them to sort the problem out and you can prove that you took all reasonable steps to resolve it from your end. It should protect you from paying excess charges if, and when, the error comes to light in a future audit and they may also waive any interest charges that will have accumulated during the state of limbo.
By the wording of your original post, it is clear that you are not trying to avoid repayment. You should certainly do all you can to clear it, even if the bank itself is at fault. This board is littered with tales of woe from people who turned a blind eye to this type of error. Years afterwards, the problem has reappears as a nightmare because they have destroyed their records and cannot remember the details to explain what had happened.0 -
Thanks for the reply, so i should write a letter to the bank and ask the current status of the account, i still have the account number so that will help. Do i fully explain whats happened or just ask for the status of the account and any amounts outstanding?
I didnt do it by DD i did it myself everymonth and then paid extra each week, shall i try and make a payment on the card and see if it get rejected?
Ill start typing the letter now and get it sent asap0 -
I would suggest a letter along the lines of :
I am enquiring about the status of my account No....... because
- put in here a very brief history of what has happened, including the date that you spoke to them, and end by saying something like .....
As I am now unable to check my account on line, I am not able to follow its progress. I would be obliged if you will immediately mail to me an up-to-date paper statement showing my current balance and details of my next payment-value and due-date as I do not wish to incurr any default penalties. Also, please re-instate paper statements until I am able to view the account on line again.
Keep a copy of the letter and send it Recorded Delivery. This will ensure that, if there is any later enquiry about the account, you will be able to prove that you did all that you could to advise them of the problem and that you have actively sought a resolution of it. Retain all paperwork for as long as you feel that there may be any future come-back on it.0 -
I decided to call them about the card as im little worried whats going on really, have found out that the card has been blocked/closed and that its in the background of my account they have given me another number to call to remove the block which will open the account so i can view it online again
so should be sorted now i hope0 -
Glad you've got it sorted.0
