Quick query on raspberry canes
Took delivery of asset of nine canes today (Glen Moy - early; Glen Ample - mid; and Autumn Bliss).
I think I'm right in that I have to soak the roots before planting, and not plant deeply. However should I trim the canes back to about 12 inches in length?
If some kind person could tell me I would be grateful. I don'T expect much of a crop this year but I don't want to kill them off at the first hurdle!
Thanks in advance.

Yes, yes and you should do but most don't;)
I pop them in a bucket for an hour or two, and prepare the planting area if you haven't already done so.
They are shallow rooted so not too deep.
The summer fruiting ones will give fruit on last years canes, so if the canes you have there are last years then they will fruit this summer, but if they are this year's canes then you won't get fruit till next summer.
It's a good idea to tag which ones fruited so you know which ones to cut back later.
Autumn ones fruit on this seasons growth, so you have there should fruit this year from them, maybe not the biggest crop, but a crop all the same.
But... good practice says prune them all back now and let them put down a good root structure, but then you won't get any fruit from any of them till next year:(
I'd leave them personally but it's no the textbook way to do it;)
Leave a good gap between the summer and autumn ones, so when they put up runners (and there will be lots!) next year you know which variety they are;)0 -
Thank you for your reply. I have labelled each one and whether they are early fruiters etc. My motivation is that I love raspberries and spend a fortune in the supermarket, so as the dd's trampoline has come down, I have the space now. Thanks again.0
