claiming tax back, whilst employed but not for long!

Hi,
I have tried to find threads relating to my topic/question but really struggle for an answer.

Here is my scenario,
I have worked in numerous jobs over the 09/10 tax year. I have not earnt over the £6000+ tax thresh-hold so I am due tax back.

However I am employed and have been by a agency since January. I am due to finish this contract next week when I go away for the summer to travel and work abroad.

My question to anyone who may help is, what are my options / tasks to get this money refunded as quickly as possible.

My first oint of call was calling the tax office, but im sure everyone knows how hard it is to get through to them at this time of the year.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You will need to wait untill you get your P60s which show how much tax you have paid in all jobs. Then send it off to your local tax office who will issue a refund on the tax. It can take up to a few months though to come through, its not something that happens overnight. Last year I sent my p60s of start of may and got my tax back start of august.

Its a form that is printed of by HR of your employer. So if in the tax year you had 5 employers expect to recieve 5 P60s. No you dont request one, they are sent automatically.
  • Ok, thank you very much!

You will only get a P60 from any employer that you are employed by on 5 April. As you say that you are owed tax back then this P60 will only have details from your last employment, details of previous employments will be on the part 1As of the P45s you recieved.

I sent my P45 1As off to my employers tax office (which was in Wales even though I live in Scotland) in March and I had my tax rebate paid from my employer within 3 weeks. Give your employers tax office a call and they will tell you what and where you need to send them.
