Ok, major novice to gardening so I'm sure this is a dumb question, have got two big plant pots and two troughs when I put plants in them do I just chuck in a load of compost?
I am putting hardy easy plants in the big pots with maybe some daff bulbs.
And in the troughs I'm putting herbs.
Lol be gentle....:rotfl:

Well I'm a complete novice too, but I have just potted up lots of herb containers (am growing them from seed). I tried to do my homework online first, and from what I read, I first put a layer of finely broken tiles on the bottom to aid drainage, and then just used a multi-purpose compost to fill.
The pots are now in my conservatory and fingers firmly crossed that seeds will germinate and plants will do ok

Plant roots need food, water, and air so check the drainage holes are large enough first then put either a layer of gravel or small stones or broken crockery in the bottom, fill most of the way up with potting compost and put in your plants in so that their surface is at the same level as the compost, firm them in . Water them and add more compost if necessary and leave a 2 " gap below the container's rim. I leave mine in the shade for a day to settle in. In 6 weeks time start feeding the plants. Job done.No longer half of Optimisticpair

Maybe leave the daff bulbs now for planting later in the year and get the most out of other things that are just coming into season? Some herbs and salad leaves etc would be ideal to get you started.0

Go to B&Q or any other DIY store and buy a bag of Gravel £2.60 or there abouts give them a wash and place some in the bottom of the pots make sure you have holes in the bottom for drainage or they will drown. apparently some people drive round the roads and layby's and borrow some off the council highways but don't say i told you because I for one wouldn't know.
and give them back to the council next year.

I swear I saw bags of broken crockery in our B&Q so may see they are still there.
