OS Moneysaving in flight food ideas?

Options
In a few short days DH and I will be taking DD and DS on an 8 hour flight to Canada:eek: I haven't flown often, but when I have I have usually been suprememly unimpressed with the food offered during the flight. Now it may be that we are going to be pleasantly surprised  but to be on the safe side I want to have a variety of food with me.

Now I don't want all my hand luggage space taken up with food, I don't want the kids high as kites from eating non-stop junk, and I don't want to spend a fortune. I always cook everything from scratch at home but I just can't get my head around what I could make/buy to take with us.

To complicate matters, we are staying in a hotel near the airport the night before we fly, so whatever I do take, must not need refridgeration as it will be in my luggage for 24 hours or more.

Any ideas anyone please? would prefer savoury to sweet but will happliy consider anything......

What about homemade flapjack with fruit bits. They are filling and can be healthy depending on what receipe you use.

Try the mega index for ideas.

How about cheese scones, chocolate beetroot muffins, fruit, sandwiches, root vegetable crisps, bombay mix, dried fruit and nuts, raw pieces of carrot and cucumber and baby sweetcorn, chunks of cheese, yoghurt, some sweets to suck or liquorish?
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • If you are having breakfast in the hotel before you fly could you perhaps make up some barm cakes and the like with the buffet food. I know it sounds awful but when we went to Disneyland Paris we made up a picnic with rolls, meat and stuff off of the buffet each morning. - that way you won't have to worry about it being okay not refridgerated!! Depending on the airline you are going with the food may not be too bad...

Which airline are you flying with? Some of them post their menus in advance on thier websites. I always find that food on long haul is supremely better than short haul anyway.

I think personally I'd blow the cost & buy some ready made sandwiches at the airport to take on the flight with me. (sounds of thuds across the nation as OS'ers everywhere faint with horror:eek::p:rolleyes:) Or at least could you take some frozen sandwhiches, if you use "safe" fillings, like hard cheese etc, they should be OK I think? Tubes of pringles, dried fruit too?

Remember you will have to ditch any leftover food before you go through customs the other end (same on return with our customs) as most countires won't let you transport meat, some cheeses & some fruits over their boarders (hardly suprising given our recent-ish BSE & foot & mouth history).

One thing I ALWAYS take with me when I fly is a big bottle of water, much easier to manage than those airline cups which fall over all the time & are never big enough.

    Have a fab time;)

If possible, check the menus on the airline's website. When I travel I request the vegetarian meal, as it's usually less junk-foody and usually your meal is fresher and served first. If you do want to bring food, how about nuts, babybel, flapjacks, fruit (fresh or dried), yogurt tubes, cherry toms, parsnip chips, mini oatcakes or rice cakes? I've got a couple of Ryanair flights coming up, so I'll probably be doing this rather than pay a fiver for a sandwich & a cola on the flight!

We very rarely eat aeroplane food, so are becoming masters of the in-flight picnic!
Pringles are a top choice as they don't get crushed to dust in your bag.
Fruit - bananas, apples, grapes & cherries are good because they don't need too much preparation. Peeling oranges & kiwi fruit at 35,000 feet is not fun!
Vegetable crudites - carrot sticks, celery etc are great for munching on. Also cherry toms.
Babybel cheese - comes ready packaged!
Flapjacks & muffins for a sweet fix.
I alwas take sandwiches too, but a lack of fridge the night before might make this a bit problematic. Most decent airport hotel rooms will have a mini bar - just take out the over priced booze & stash your picnic in there.
Be wary of taking nuts on planes because of nut allergy sufferers. Most airlines don't serve the many more.
Take lots of water to drink - avoid alcohol & fizzy drinks as they only make the dehydration worse. On long haul flights I like to have a rehydrating drink like lucozade sport or powerade as well.
Picky bits to graze on are usually better than a full meal. That way you can spread the food out during the flight to give you something to do!
Don't forget a carrier bag for all your rubbish & a pack of napkins/wet wpies for sticky fingers. Can you make the kids a picnic box each with their food in, so they have to carry it in their hand luggage?
Scheduled flight food in infinately better than charter flights, so depending on the airline it might not be too bad.

Definitely echo Lillibet's instructions re dumping food left at end of flight. Last time we flew to San Diego, California, an American mum and her 3 children, all under 5 by the look of it, had forotten ONE orange left in hand luggage. They were arresting her as we went through customs! Poor woman was pleading, but nobody was listening.icon9.gif
