how much is it for a carer

Options
My grandmother has had a stroke causing her to have weakness in her left arm and leg at the moment she cannot walk but is in intermediate care so they are hoping that they can get her walking with a frame and get her using her arm more. I imagined that she would have to go into a resindential home but talking to the care staff where she is they say that they will get her back in her own home with a care package so i was just wondering how much does a carer cost is it per hr are can you have one for half an hour etc.
Thankyou

If she has not already been appointed a Social Worker from Adult Social Care then if I were you I would contact them and arrange for a care assessment. However, the hospital where she is now receiving imtermediate care may have done this already. It would depend on her financial circumstances whether there will be a charge or not.

Please make sure that your grandmother's arm is supported at all times e.g. when she sits, put a pillow or cushion on arm of chair. Allowing the arm to hang down is extremely painful as the shoulder capsule has been loosened and permanent damage can result by allowing arm to hang by its own weight.

When my first husband had strokes he would wear a tweed jacket and put his hand into the pocket, this way his arm was supported when he walked. I still shudder whenever I see stroke victims with arm unsupported and I can imagine the pain this causes them, just because those around them are not aware.

As far as I can remember my mum's care agency charged £8 an hour but the carers would come in for 30 minute slots.

My work colleague's mum who had a stroke has carers in 4 times a day for 30 minutes each time- in the morning to get her up, at lunch and tea time and to put her to bed.

I think the council does a financial assessment and will cover the cost if your grandmother's savings are under a certain amount.

My elderly MIL does not even have to pay for her carers. They come twice a day to get her up , organise breakfast and lucnh and put her to bed and check that she has taken her tablets. Her needs and means were assessed and to my surprise this is what she gets. She pays a cleaner and a bath nurse for extra help.

Where I am the agencies charge £14/hour but, yes, you can ask for just half an hour. I pay my PAs £8/hour. She should be offered the choice of traditional services (where SS organise carers) or a budget which she manages herself (and if she can't manage the paperwork then her SW should do this for her). The advantage of the latter is that she can employ who she wants for the times she wants and is not constrained by agency prices but it has the downside of her being responsible for PAYE, safety checks etc.
