If doing this DIY why not invest in a pump so you can suck the oil out of the dipstick hole. It makes the job so much quicker and cleaner - well worth it in my opinion.0

That sounds good, how much are the pumps though, are they cheap?thescouselander wrote: »If doing this DIY why not invest in a pump so you can suck the oil out of the dipstick hole. It makes the job so much quicker and cleaner - well worth it in my opinion.0

You really need to have the oil hot otherwise it takes an age to workUsed one of these recently and the only oil I spilled was the new oil I poured in, lol.
I have also had the dropped sump plug and oil filter experiences. If you undo the sump plug for the last bit with your hand, grab and pull away so oil doesn't pour on to you, it usually works ok.0 -
Here's the one I got - slightly better price too:

Sucking the oil up through the dipstick tube
What about all the crap it leaves in the bottom of the engine for the fresh oil to flush round the system when it goes back in? Surely there is a reason why you let the oil out luck warm and from the lowest point of the engine bay.
If you arent comfortable with doing it yourself, dont, pay for it to be done properly. It costs between £25 - £50 to get it done, if you !!!!!! it up yourself it will cost you a whole lot more if you get it wrong. If you are serious about doing it yourself but arent comfortable find a family member who is and do it with them or watch them the first time0 -

Drive and get the oil as hot as you can, the sludge will then be mixed in. If you are really concerned, or have previously neglected oil changes, fill up engine with some cheap oil (i.e. 20w50 from Morrison's) run the engine again to mix with sludge and heat it up, then drain that and fill up with the good stuff and new filter. That will get more crap out than simply opening the sump plug.0 -
there is no problem with sucking it out of the dipstick tube
a lot of new cars dont have sump plugs anymore and the japs have been doing this process for years0 -
I am a woman, and I would be confident doing an oil & filter change now, having seen it done once - and tbh probably could have done it all myself with the aid of the haynes manual if I hadn't had someone on hand to show me. If you have a haynes manual, you should be ok doing it yourself. Air filter is P1$$ easy to do too, and if you are getting parts anyway, you might as well change that too if it is about time for it.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0
