multiplying plants/trees

Hi, im a gardening newbie and was just interested if there are ways to take clippings of plants and grow more, for example i have just bought a Acer Palmatum (dp) shrub and a Camelia (sp!) ive also got a few climbers going up my fense (forgooton what they are cslled though) These plants can get so expensive ot buy but there must be a way becasue the garden centre grow them lol..I could be way out of my depth though...

    You can reproduce plants through taking cuttings although it can be a bit of an art, depending on what plant it is. Your best bet is to have a look at a website such as the Royal Horticultural Society one, which will give you tips.

    What sort of climbers are you talking about? One way to propagate some of them is to peg a stem to the ground by a leaf node and pile soil over it. Usually the plant will form roots in a few months. Then you cut off the stem where it attaches to the parent and you have a new plant.

    Camellia can probably be propagated from cuttings but I've never attempted it myself. They'd need to be taken at the right time of year and from the right kind of shoot (i.e. not a flowering one). I don't think you stand much of a chance with the Japanese maple but it won't hurt to try!
