was the bank right to charge?

hi,
My bf checked his balance this morning and had let money go out of his account even though he didnt have enough in his bank it was a direct debit that he forgot about.
He spoke to someone and they said he may or may not be charged with £20 charge he rang his dad to see if he could lend some cash so he wouldnt be charged rang up at 4.30pm and they told him the payment had been returned and he occured a £20 charge is this right?

    Yes, he authorised a payment when he had insufficient funds to cover it. Why do you feel that he should not be charged?
