I am with Insure and go and have an annual multi trip policy. I am going to the usa in july. I have read through the policy wording booklet, and unless I am blind I cannot see where it is stated that they do not cover the volcano ash problem. Would someone be able to tell me where in the policy wording I can find this?

Hopefully it'll have, literally, all blown over by then but if it hasn't:

    Section A Cancellation exclusions:
    "actions taken by the
government of any country" (ie the CAA closing down the airspace)
& "The provider not providing [the flight] .....you should claim against the provider

Section F Abandonment Exclusions "will will pay if ..delayled by poor weather conditions" volcano ash is probably not weather

Section K Catastrophe. will pay if you cannot in booked accomodation because of fire, flood, earthquake (list continues but doesn't include volcano)
  • Hi,
Hope someone can help me. I'm off to the states for 2weeks on the 2nd of June and I haven't purchased any travel insurance!!! And due to all of the news coverage of insurers not paying out (like a pub slot machine) I am left wondering if I buy insurance... am I covered if my flights are delayed or cancelled?

Can anyone point me in the right direction to a decent insurance company who are cheap and offer good cover for a family of 3 (1 infant).

    Hope you can help

    Thanks

I am a bit alarmed at your comment in bold above. There is no IF about it, you need travel insurance for all the other things that may happen such as illness or accident.

Also do not buy on price alone, especially for the US. Read the policies carefully to ensure that you are covered for everything you need.

Fortis from the Post Office come highly recommended as they are good at paying out. They are not the cheapest, but the cover is good.

Avoid anything underwritten by Axa or White Horse.

If you are flying with an EU-based operator then you will be covered for delays or cancellation, but if it is an American carrier you will only be covered for care departing from the UK. However you will still be put on the next available flight if you are delayed or your flight cancelled. This is in relation to the volcano. There are other reasons you may be delayed or cancelled and you would need to read the policy.

Also remember to declare any pre-existing medical conditions to your insurer - any illnesses or surgery in the past - otherwise your policy may be invalid and the insurer may not pay out.
  • Second that comment - seriously consider buying travel insurance.

Seriously do not consider Insure and Go

Co-Op and HSBC seem pretty good - both have agreed to pay up volcanic ash claims

Holiday extras are refusing to pay anything after my return flight to the UK was cancelled and I spent an extra 7 days in Spain, they did however mention that they would pay for any customer whose outgoing flight was delayed.

I'm in the process of writing a letter asking for further clarification as I feel in the mood to pursue this further.
