Income Support form/child savings

I am filling in an Income Support form and want to know if I should be declaring the £5 a week that my child's grandfather pays through standing order directly into child's own bank account. I think of it as belonging to my child, not me, so need not be declared. But am I right?

Thanks for any advice on this - these forms always send me into a state.

If you have access to the bank account then yes, you do need to declare it, you can have up to £6000 before it will affect your claim, for anything between £6000 and £16,000 £1 is taken off your personal allowance (PA) for every £250 over the £6000.

Declare it just to be on the safe side!
Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.

Thanks for your response missmontana! It is in child's own name and I do not have personal access to it. It's not lots of money but is a regular £5 a week ( its used as pocket money).

From my experience my daughter has had a savings policy since she was 2 and when i was on income support they said i should declare when it reaches a certain amount now sure how much it was though as i no longer receive IS but i would tell them better safe than sorry

Thanks mum2twins. I know I must declare if child's savings are over £2,500 (they are not), so your info is useful.

Children are allowed less than £3000, without affecting your IS.
