Refund from university?

I have just checked my online banking and found I have a £940 refund from the university I am attending. I have been off ill for a few months and my course leader and everyone who teaches me knows this.

I have managed to get out of 50% of the final amount that needed paying for my flat and sent a cheque for this amount to them this week so I can't imagine it is for that.

The only option I can think of is they have kicked me off the course for attendence. But this seems a little unfair as I have been off ill. (I am changing courses next year if i'm up to it and have an unconditional place.. but this isn't related). I had every intention to do the exams next month.

So what should I do now? Wait for them to contact me or ring them? (I know I should have probably done this straight away, I'm just checking they can't ask for it back!)

I'd really appreciate any help. :)

  • Do you qualify for a full grant? I only ask as my son got refunded some money from his Uni as he had to pay the full amount of course fees (well the tuition loan paid it) and he gets a full grant. All Unis are supposed to refund some money to you if you meet this criteria. The minimum they can pay back is just over £300 but some Unis pay a lot more. He got his refund in the second term but your Uni may pay out this term instead. Worth checking if that's what it is, give the finance dept a quick ring, then you don't have to worry about whether you can spend it or not.

That's a bursary isn't it? Are you eligible for one...as they should send a letter out saying what's going on..Or are you due student grant/loan and could this be a payment?

It isn't a bursary. It was stated on my bank account as a "refund".

I've just rang up and had a very heated conversation with a rude man who almost left me in tears. It turned out it is the accommodations mistake and instead of asking me for 50% of the final amount they refunded me 50% of the amount I had already paid.
None of this is my fault and he was so rude to me. I know they would have found out eventually but I wish I never bloody rang.

So where do I stand now? I didn't feel happy about paying it back over the phone as they have made nothing but mistakes and I don't trust them with my bank details!
