Child Tax Credit

I have 2 sons one turned 16 Dec 09 and the other turned 18 Jan 10. This April my child tax credit was reduced by £60 without any warning. I contacted the IR and they informed me that this was due to my 16 year old leaving school July 2010, I informed them that he was continuing in full time education to do his A levels. The IR said that the reduction was normal and there was nothing I could do till September when i should contact them to let them know that he is continuing into the 6th Form and then my case would be re-assessed.
I have spoken to the IR twice and dont seem to getting a clear answer if anyone can shed any light on this i would be very grateful.

hi Upset Mum my eldest son left school last year(july), he went on to further education. My tax credit payments for him stopped in August last year. When I called IR they asked info on the college he was attending and info on his course, after the adviser checked she came back and told me they could still pay me for him. They were very helpful and re-enstated the payments.
hope that helps

The award for 2010/2011 will be based on your son leaving education on 31st August 2010. They will not extend his education until you can confirm that he is staying on and can provide details of the course he is going to attend. You cannot give them that until he gets his exam results and confirmation that he has been accepted on a course or back to school to do A levels.
Child Benefit will also stop for him on 31st August for the same reason and you will have to contact them too in August to advise them of the details. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
