just looking at options for breakdown cover & steering clear of the overpriced AA/RAC - anyone used/called out autoaid or autonational recently? Thanks!

Called out Autoaid once last year, they use local independent recovery firms, so they took 10mins to get to me. I would recommend

You might find that AA/RAC/GreenFlag beat Autoaid if going through a cashback site such as TopCashBack.

I did this last year with AA and got high spec cover very cheap.

After reading a thread on here I have taken out with the company above. At this stage I have no idea how good they are but my research at the time suggested they seemed OK.

    £29.

I have been with Green Flag for a couple of years as they were cheaper than the AA or RAC for better cover! They actually quote like a proper insurer and part of it is based on your car, so if you have a newish car it's cheaper than if you're running an old banger, as you're less likely to break down.

I had to call them out last summer. They don't have their own vans; they sub it out to local breakdown services. Still, got through straight away on the phone, and had no problems despite the fact I was on an unfamiliar road and my description of where I was wasn't the best! They said the van would arrive within an hour which it did (about 45 mins). After the call, I had a text to say which company were coming and giving me their contact number.

    All very good.

One tip - the renewal they send out costs more than joining as a new customer! Despite them offering a "no callout discount" if you've had no claims. So each year I cancel at the end of the year and sign up again.

They also offer good cashback via Quidco. :money:

    Hi

Just a couple of questions. I'd been with RAC having bought cover with tesco vouchers - however, that method was getting a bit pricey - the vouchers were definitely not worth 4x the value. Anyway - they sent me a renewal letter - giving me a 40% discount because I was a tesco clubcard customer - I thought - hmm that sounds good.

They then offered me a £14 discount for paying in one lump sum.

So this now brought my cover down from £60 to about £30. I assumed that given the £60 starting price I was on the "level 2" cover (roadside & rescue I think) - I had done Tesco a few times - year 1 I had gone for the whole shaboodle (incl at home cover) - I did remember downgrading the next year - so I thought that sounded like a good deal so I agreed to it.

However, when my membership pack came, I was just on the basic cover.

Looking on their website, that is priced at £28 (vehicle cover) - that's even before taking into account any cashback sites.

So I emailed them and explained this - and they told me that these prices were for new customers!!! And that the £60 I had been quoted was correct!!! I therefore assume I will not be able to aplly as a new customer like the previous poster has done with Green Flag -

When is one a new customer - if I go with AA for a year, and then next year go back to RAC am I a new customer?

Auotaid (Autonational is the same company) have a very good reputation. I've seen very good feedback about on them a motoring forum. They use the same local garages that the AA does, when you call the AA you dont always get an AA van come out, they often sub out to local recovery operators.

I've used RescueMyCar.com for the last couple of years. Prices are great - can't comment on the service as I haven't broke down! (touch wood)

I'm currently looking for new breakdown cover after my AA renewal is sky high - just cancelled it. After seeing a few people mention Autoaid on here I looked into them and found that the reviews were mixed, some good some bad. The bad ones were pretty bad like the drivers not actually being a mechanic and not even opening the bonnet, just towing to garage.

Autoaid on the surface does look impressive - including overnight accomodation etc if needed.

Anyone had experience calling them out?

It's either them or GreenFlag for me, just got a quote for £23 for basic cover + home start by going through TopCashBack.

I signed up to Tesco Breakdown which is basically Green Flag as the cost was really cheap, about £60 but it was on offer for £50. I know it's only vehicle based cover although I think someone found a loophole but we only have one car anyway.
