In the mean time use wire wool / scouring pads to block up any holes. They can't chew through it.Looking forward to the future.0

I feel for you, it's horrible when you see a rat in your garden: before we moved house, we had a terrible rat problem in our old back garden. You could literally look out the window sometimes and see two or three at a time. We had to stop feeding the birds because they used to run up the birdtable, perform acrobatics to get on top of it, and just clear up all the birdfood. Unfortunately, you can bet that if you've seen one, it will have a rather large family not far away.
We used rat poison dotted around the garden. We put it in empty tuna cans as the smell atracted them to it, the cans were covered over with rocks or bricks at an angle, close to the holes and runs so that birds and cats couldn't get to it.
It did the trick. After about a week of refilling the pots when necessary, the rats were all gone. They did return the next year but we just did the same thing and it worked well. I don't know if you'd be prepared to use the poison with a rabbit in your garden but thought I'd mention it

They love the gaps between fences or between fences and sheds. We had them a couple of years ago when there was some building work nearby, the construction people say that everytime they start building they disturb the local rat population who up and move somewhere else. I tried to convince myself I'd seen a squirrel but knew I hadn't .........
Took me about two years before I felt confident enough to leave the back door open but on the plus side, the council guys were fantastic and cleared the problem up in no time.0 -
