Right I think that we'll leave the ladybirds to do their thing as I don't really want to harm them and like has been said, they are doing the job for me for free!
Not sure where the photos have gone as I haven't removed them (?!), but I'll perhaps take some more so that the first plant can be identified...
Thanks for the information about the fungal problem gardenroute - I have no idea how long it's been like it as we only moved in Feb, however I suspect that you may be right about the cultural problem. I will look into mulching and de-weeding the area around the plant to see if that helps and also pruning off the worst areas.
