To toast or not to toast?.

Does anyone know how to disconnect one side of a toaster?..sounds tricky maybe..but i only ever toast one slice at a time so to me thats a lot of wasted electricity..

Does anyone know of a toaster that is a two slice machine but that has a button to make it one slice only?.,,seems like a good idea to me..there must be thousands of single people who could use such an option

Lastly..does anyone know if it is more economical to toast one slice of toast under a gas grill or is the trusty toaster the better option even with the wasted 2nd slot burning away doing nothing..

thanks in advance for your input..

I only looked at this thread as I thought the title was amusing:j

We have such a toaster but at over £100 you may think again...

It is a Dualit toaster and we used vouchers we had to buy it. It is a nice toaster but worth that much????

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dualit-Slice-Toaster-Stainless-20245/dp/B00008BQZE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1271615875&sr=8-2

Sorry for the long link - I wish I could do the little linky thing...

I don't think you would save all that much money doing that anyway. Even if the toaster was 1 kWh it takes what? 5 mins to toast a slice of bread 1/12 * 10p = .08333, less than 1p a slice.

But if you want to try and save less than 1/2p a slice you could cut the element at one side, unless it is the same element at both sides.

My mum's money saving include (She was brought up during the war)

Switching the iron off when you iron the last shirt as it stays hot.

You could only have butter on toast if you had no spread eg Jam on it, if you had spread on it you had to have margarine on the basis of you could not taste the butter if you had a spread on it.

Re using envelopes by crossing out the address and writing the new address on.

Switching off the over 15 minutes before the food has finished cooking on the basis that it stays hot.

She was green before everyone else...
  • Hey thanks Jennifer..

    i didn't know the costs..hmmm 1p a slice isn't so bad i guess..

Dacouch thanks!..they are good tips actually..especially the gas oven one..
Friends of the earth used to give away sticky address sheets that could be licked and stuck over written-on/used envelopes so they could be re-used..
    maybe they still do..

im still interested if the gas would be cheaper..i guess its got to do both sides but the cost per kw/h is less that electricity..so would i be right in assuming
to toast under the grill is cheaper?

The cheapest way to make your toast is to stick a couple of slices at the bottom of your bed on your electric blanket, they'll just be browning as your rising

Cut the slice of bread in half and put each half in either side of the toaster.

Only have breakfast every other day but then eat two slices, utilising both sides of the toaster to the full.:rotfl:
