Automatic startup programs

Is there anything I can do to stop programs automatically starting at startup. For example MSM and Voipcheap. If I ever start one of these programs then the next time I switch on my computer there they are at startup. I remove them using Ccleaner and all is OK till I start one of them again. What I want to do is to be able to use one of these programs (and others) when I want to without having to then go into Ccleaner to remove them from my startup sequence. Is this possible?

if you open the program and go into settings you can actually tell it not to run at startup, i know live messenger has this option and will insist on putting itself back on startup if you dont tell it to stop via the software itself, i dont use it now so i cant tell you the exact option but if you open wlm press alt+t then click options, its in there somewhere.0

Ok first things first get rid of all your sh!tty ccCleaners etc total rubbish! Definitely not needed 2nd ensure in future when installing programmes to do a custom/advanced install then you dictate wether shortcuts or quick launch etc are installed. Finally if you don't have run feature turned on go to start then in the search box type msconfig then go to startup and then you can uncheck all the boxes for messnger and the other programmes you dont want starting. apply and ok that do a restart tick the box to say "don't show me again. and your good to go.0

At the run prompt type msconfig [enter] then click the startup tab, here you can see what is running on startup you can uncheck some of these like messenger, adobe reader, and others.
Deselect a few reboot and if you are happy tick the dont remind me prompt which will now appear once.
I find this the best way, here the services are still setup to start in the background (services.msc c.panel > admin tools > services etc) so if you do open a program directly it will still open automatically. Also check your programs > startup folder.0 -
To the above posters - read the OP. He knows how to remove the programs from startup, the problem is whenever she runs the programs they add themselves back to the startup list. He wants them to stop doing this so he doesn't have to keep removing them.If I ever start one of these programs then the next time I switch on my computer there they are at startup. OP, you need to do this within the individual program settings. Both MSN and voipcheap should have a setting in the options allowing you to turn off autostart.
You can't 'blacklist' applications unfortunately, if you remove them and they add themselves back again then you can only change the program's settings or remove the program altogetherpoppy100 -
To disable Messenger from starting up, open it up, press the Alt key to bring up the menubar, choose Tools menu,/ Options/ General
category /uncheck the 'Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to Windows' option.

Note to self, you can point out errors from posters but can do so without being pedantic.0 -
