Thanks for the replies. I was thinking about getting a mini duna hamster cage as they are supposed to be cat proof.

About that cage - we bought a similar (normal sized one) one. They're nice and roomy, easy access due to the large entrance in the lid, and easy to clean but none of our critters that we put in it ever got the hang of the water bottle. And other water bottles don't fit it. So ours was never used for more than a few minutes a week when we'd put some of the critters in while cleaning their proper homes. I'd have thought though, that if it was a design fault a lot more people would have had problems with the bottle, so perhaps ours was just faulty. Please bear it in mind though.

We've never had mice, but our cats have lived in harmony with hamsters and gerbils after paying them a lot of attention for the first few days. Obviously, make sure you have a secure cage, and until you know the cat can be trusted to not pester the cage, never have the cat in the same room unless a responsible person is there at the same time

your link btw - you lost an "a" from catalog :)

Thanks inspired2. I'll think about looking around for another cage. I've looked at a 3 tier cage for rats, mice and hamsters. It's a wire cage with a plastic base and 2 wooden floors. Not sure how the wooden floors would hold up to rodent teeth and urine.
Has anybody got any advice on mouseproofing a room.
