2005 jeep cherokee tailgate wont open

I don't think it will be relevant but is the battery flat?
Have you tried opening it on the key fob and on the drivers door lock?
If you need me too look at one I will when the boss gets home from her mother's.0 -
Right, i've just managed to unplug the connector to the latch assembly, the voltage is working ok to it when the fob is pressed to lock/ unlock. Looks like a faulty motor. Now i'm challenged with a locked tailgate and trying to get the latch off. Took a look at the service manual and it looks like the latch assembly is screwed from the outside. Any ideas???0
