This is a typical result of Nu Labours Tax credits system as it just encourages people to rely on the State more and more ,which of coarse is Nu -Labours plan .People are less likely to vote for another party in a General Election.Don't think I'm pro Tory or Lib Dems as they are all as bad as each other.

Not having a go at you OP, its the Government of the day. I'm self-employed and more and more people I know are cutting their hours purely because they will be "Entitled" to more benefits...........

My question is Who will be left working to pay for all this?....IMO ANY entitlement to benefits should be linked to peoples National Insurance stamps,so if you have paid in for a good number of years you reap a reward......
    Totally agree

Arcana Im 41 yrs old and Ive worked 25yrs so far and during that time ive been out of work for around 1yr.We need a welfare state but don't be misled into thinking that working here for 10 yrs means you have paid much into the system. We have a very unbalanced welfare state here where the benefits bill each year is now more than the entire income tax receipts.........That is a frightening thought. All the income tax we all pay each year is less than the benefits paid out .......Shocking truth This year my tax bill will be around £6,500......

I just hope a change of Government will change the incentives of the working population...... Jeezuz we need it.......Don't hold out much hope though TBH

Or, to put it succinctly, the problem with socialism is that eventually, you run out of other people's money ;)

The OP has said his 'wife is more foreign than him', with him being from the EU. So sounds like she is possibly here on a student visa - and therefore, not entitled to any help whatsoever in the form of student loans (in fact, if she's at uni and an international student not from the EU, she could be paying £9K per year in tuition).

If the OP gets any tax credits etc., he will also not be receiving any for the fact that there is a second adult in the house if she's on a student visa, as she would have 'no recourse to public funds' stamped across her passport. So, again, making up anywhere near to the £4k would be very very hard to do. Looking for another job, or another part time job to work in with less hours in current job would be his only option.

OP - try raising a family of five children on the same salary you are raising one on.......it wasn't easy.

i'm so happy that your housing is cheap, being a council property, and that you have worked for 9 1/2 years. ive worked for 30 years, and my son cant even get accepted onto the council housing list! by all means do your boss a 'favour', but not until youve found yourself a second part time job!

and btw......how much benefit would you be entitled to in your country of origin?

leveller2911: I get what you are saying and honestly, it's not that I think 30 hours of work for me is more than enough and that I just want to "sit back and suck the state dry". Heck, if I could do what I do best, I'd happily put in 60-70 hours a week but I guess with this job 40 hours is almost too much.
I have been considering going self employed for several years now - as a matter of fact I registered as self employed in 2008, but I think I've made around £1k since then as self employed - woopedoo. It's not like I have a shop or anything - work is extremely scarce - for me anyway.
I guess I'll start looking for a part time job. With one day a week I guess it's either McD or a bar.

Yes, wife has a student loan, but that is not exactly an income. That's just more debt.

I have no idea how much benefit how could get in my country of origin I'm afraid.

Student loans count as income when you claim means tested benefits.

As your wife gets the student loan that will wipe out any entitlement again to benefits. Its counted as income as its for buying things for studying and also living expenses.

We don't have any savings, but have quite a bit of debt unfortunately.

go over to the debt free wanabee board and complete a statement of accounts, they'll be able to advise you how to best deal with them.

since it seems from the advice that you may experience a loss of income without any additional benefits, you have to cut your outgoings, including the servicing of the debts, and the DFW members may be able to help you with that particular bottleneck.
