Trellis - how to fix to wall or fence?

Hi

We have short boundary walls and fences in our garden.

We'd like to fix trellis to the top so we can grow climbers to add privacy.

The type we're thinking of is the one that is around 30cm tall x 183cm long. This added to the existing height of wall/fence should be all we need.

Not sure how we go about fixing it securely though - please can anyone help on this?

The wall is a bit complicated as it has coping stones on top, kind of like the roof of a house, like a triangular hat - it's a party wall so we can't remove these coping stones so adding the trellis seems a bit tricky?

On the other side it's just an ordinary fence, standard height around 5 ft.

Many thx in advance.

If it needs to attach to the wall, you could use rawlbolts to fix some suitable size posts to it. You may need some additional wood spacers to handle the amount the coping stones extend beyond the wall.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Just following on from this, could someone give me some advice? There is a trellis which is fixed on my side of a dividing wall with my neighbours, so I assume that it's 'my' trellis. I haven't put anything trailing on it yet.Yesterday they fixed up a trellis on the opposite dividing wall, and have trailed a bamboo on it. Today, I've noticed they've also trailed a bamboo on 'my' trellis as well, weaving it up the length of the trellis with a bit overhanging my garden. Are they allowed to do this on a trellis which is fixed to my side of the wall without asking me first? Thanks.

no they are not. and youre allowed to cut off any overhanging into you property.
however is it worth the possible fallout with the neighbour?

Thanks Ormus. Thing is, we're not that friendly anyway, and I've had to complain about the amount of noise they make, which is why this seems extra cheeky. I'll leave it for the moment, but if it gets too overgrown, particularly on my side, then I'll cut it back as you suggest, and maybe even snip a bit more, to make the point! It just means I don't have a choice of what I'd like to grow on it.

do you know who is responsible for the boundary on that side? we're in a long road of semis and each house down the road is responsible for the boundary (fence or whatever) on the right hand side of their garden. just thought you might want to consider that - although it doesn't negate what ormus said.

I don't think we have anything like that. The posts for the trellis are nailed to my side of the brick wall. The one they put up yesterday is nailed up to their side of the opposite wall, but they've trailed their plants on both. I think it's very cheeky, but I'll probably leave it, and keep trimming them back. I guess it saves me for planting anything!

You will need to fix spacers to the wall so as to bring the trellis supports clear of the capping stones. Not really any different to fixing the trellis supports to a flat wall face. I read somewhere that burglars tend to stay clear of fences with trellis on the top. Because of the noise that the trellis makes when it is broken down by an intruder trying to climb it.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
