I went to my local brand in Dec to get 2 tyres replaced. Everything was dandy so I thought (having only driven around town), Until my first trip on motorway in March. As soon my speed went above 55mph there was vibrations coming through the steering. The next day I took my car back to the branch that fitted my tyres to be told they were too busy to look at it. The following day I took my car to another local garage who found the problem was due to national putting 600grams of un-needed weights on my tyres and that the wrong type of weight had been used causing slight damage to my alloys.

Went straight back to national to let them know what had happed so they could take it up with the person who fitted them. The manager couldn't have cared less did not even want to look into it, said its been 3 months thats too long, explained hadn't been on a moterway since then as the problem only happens at speed I had no way of knowing. To which he got really quite nasty with the way he was talking and told me to get an invoice from the other garage and they would give my the £10 back. Completely missing the point that I wanted them to look into it and not just throw a scrap of cash at me. He didn't even seem phased when I told him my alloys were damaged (only slightly on the inner rim so not really too bothered about that), not looking for compo or anything just feel they should have at least took it up with the person working there that has no clue what he's doing :(

Have wrote to there head office to let them know, so hopefully they will take it a little more seriously

Has anyone had any complaints with them ?

  • I think you should have noticed the problem with 3 months, as the tyre does have 'wear and tear; on it by this stage.

If the tyre fitters can't do a basic job such as, you know, fiting a tyre, then make a note of that and never, ever return. I say this with long experience of this type of thing. Sometimes, for reasons I cannot fathom, you come across a fitters who are utterly incompetent and no matter how many times you return your situation will not be remedied. One place (can't recall who, they've gone bust & vanished now) balanced my wheels four times in one day without remedying the situation. Next day I went to ATS and they sorted the problem right away, telling me the previous place had used the wrong weights on the wrong part of the wheel.

Also, after incurring alloy damage three times, I now take photos of all 4 alloys prior to taking the car in for any work whatsoever. It sounds like overkill but 30 seconds vs £250 for another alloy is a no-brainer.

Did you read my post before replying ? not sure how having excess weights chapped in to my alloys could be wear and tear :undecided
