Punto diesel starter motor,any alternatives

My wifes N reg punto diesel needs a new starter motor.Local parts factor place say £70+vat and thats exchange.At the weeekend I will go to the scrapyard to try and get one but but know from previous experience that punto diesels (in fact most things diesel) are rare as rockin horse doodoo.Does anyone know for certain if a starter off another model is the same, so as to widen my chances of finding one.

Diesel models usually have larger batteries and starters due to extra torque needed to crank them over when starting. If you can get the part numbers off the current item then do a net search to see what other vehicles have the same part in them. Googling part numbers works well.

A bit too dark and I'm too tired to go searching for part numbers now.Thanks for the tip though,I'll give it a go after work tomorrow.

I think you can get alternators serviced. Look in yellow pages. They might offer exchange units for less than motor factors.

I have had a look through the Fiat Parts CD. Unfortunately, the part numbers listed for the Punto Diesel (93-97) starter motor dont match any of the other Fiat models. I have compared with Bravo/Brava, Tipo and Uno. You might just have to bite the bullet and go for what is on offer.
