YHA Central London

Was wondering if anyone had stayed at the Youth hostel association place in central London?

I am looking for some cheapish but nice accomodation for my family of 5 in London in the summer holidays.

Any other suggestion are very welcome. :)

Ive not stayed in the YHA but have stayed in uni vacation rooms before in central London. Have a look at the LSE (London school economics) vacation rooms from around £30-£35 a night single room, they do doubles too and include breakfast on some offers, plus use of shared kitchens. Some unis will book out flats for your stay that might suit better?

Travelodge have their summer sale on and do family rooms - might still be some availability?

Some of the hostels like Generator might be too noisy for a family group but the unis are fairly quiet Ive found over summer - Ive laways stayed at Passfield hall (LSE run) I go for Travelodge first then move to uni rooms if I cant find a Travelodge.

Id also advise to check any hotel reviews on Tripadvisor as there are a lot of not so nice yet over priced cheaper hotels in London!

I've stayed in the one opposite the British Library (Kings Cross/St Pancras) a couple of years ago. It was great value in a really good location. The building was a bit old but we got a twin room and it was clean and comfortable.

Depending on the night of the week, the Travelodge is sometimes better value for a bed for the night - worth checking before you book. I guess the advantage of the YHA is you can keep costs down by not eating out.

Only trouble with the Travel Lodge is that it doesn't do family rooms for 5 i dont think!

St Pancreas is more suited to families, I think since it is in a slightly less noisy location and has more private rooms. It's not really that far away from the centre/tourist areas either.

I stopped at St Pancras YHA with my son a couple of years ago. Like others have said it was good value and it was a good base for a few days in London.
  • A friend of mine stayed in London Central a little while back and didn't really like it - apparently it was a bit too much of a 'party' hostel, noises in the early hours etc. Then again that might have just been who was there at the time, as she did say the location was good.

I'd be more inclined to go for the St Pancras one myself though, apparently that's been done up a lot recently and as it's not really in town it might be a lot quieter.

The YHA at London Central is excellent. Approx £103 per night for a 6 bed family room (I would guess 3 x 2 bunk beds) on suite.

Add approx £3.50 each if you want breakfast there.

The hostel is only 2/3 years old, on a quiet street but walking distance to Regents Park . Oxford Street / Hyde Park / Buck Palace.

My 2 kids (10 & 7) loved it and we had no problem with noise the weekend we were there.

It does have a bar / cafe area so I could imagine it could get noisy - maybe we were lucky.

    Highly recommended.

Try and walk (or get the bus) in London - much more fun than the tube.

Yes I think you would need 2 rooms as they usually take bookings for 3 people in a room, I know people who have got abot 5-6 people in a room but they only booked 3 in so Id not advise that - as means not everyone is on the check in list in case of a fire drill/fire.

I know groups of people who have booked a YHA room - good thing there is you can get everyone in 1 room and usually get access to the lounge/kitchens/laundry and left luggage (which travelodge dont offer)

    Hope you get booked soon:)

  • I think the offers for travel lodge have finished now. Just missed them! Just my luck!

Looked at the St Pancras YHA last night. Looks quite nice. Its just the unknown isnt it? You know what you are getting with Travel Lodge. Trying to convince my DH it will be an adventure! Not sure if he is buying it yet. Will have to book something soon though before all the rooms go.
  • I stayed in one called journeys in kings cross. It was really good, they were decorating the entrance hall at the time but this will complete by now. I would definately recommend it.
