......... it depends if you are after an authentic looking wooden floor or just a hardwearing version of lino ....

It's all personal choice at the end of the day and there are many factors to consider, ranging from style of house to type of lifestyle.....which is why sites like this are handy to gather opinion. :)

also the laminate is rendered completely useless if you manage to get too much water in the wrong place as it will bubble up and look rubbish, it depends if you are after an authentic looking wooden floor or just a hardwearing version of lino

True, but that's what you have house insurance for! Also technology, with regards to water resistance, has come on leaps and bounds. The stuff in my kitchen has survived quite a few soakings, however you are correct, it isn't anywhere close to the resistance to water as you get with real wood. It WILL buckle if liquid manages to penetrate the MDF/HDF layer of the laminate. The real decision is always cost vs. aesthetics.

Solid wood flooring is the best kind of flooring that you can use for your home. Laminate flooring might be cheaper than solid wood flooring but there are many advantages of wood flooring over laminate flooring. Laminate flooring cannot be finished as it is a layer of paper that is placed on top of the material.

    Solid wood costs a fortune.
Engineered is OK if you haven`t got kids and pets but not in kitchens and bathrooms.
Can`t comment on laminate, never had it,but some I have seen in other`s houses look cheap and crap and always appears badly fitted after a while.

Personally, if I had my way, I would have ceramic tiles everywhere.

To OP is that £5,000 plus?
  • Quickstep all the way I've got it in my living room and hall way, seven years of dogs, kids and stilletos and it looks as good as the day it was laid. Its takes quite a lot of force to dint or scratch it. The only thing I did note that scratched easy was an old sofa we had with castors did but now if we move the sofas we pop the rug underneith the feet as we swing them round!!
