Getting ESA to pay your mortagage interest

Hi,

I'm in the process of applying for Employment Support Allowance had a telephone call from ESA about the rules on mortgage interest. They told me the government will only pay interest on the original purchase of the property and anything that was done for home improvement.

Based on own figures that works out about half monthly interest to pay my mortgage.

Has anyone had a similar problem

Thanks

Those are the rules - why would they pay for anything else?

Why would the government i.e the rest of us pay towards anything other than the cost of your house, any other amount you have chosen to add to your mortgage amount was your choice. At least you had the option to add to a mortgage, I cant even get onto the housing ladder to have a mortgage, I pay my taxes to fund other peoples mortgage interest payments!
Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!

They won't pay "anything" for home improvements. They'll only contribute towards those items used to maintain the fitness of your home for human habitation ... i.e. major things like a new roof, re-wiring, new windows to replace rotten frames etc.

In general terms they pay towards the original sum borrowed. If you've rem-mortgaged since then, they'll want to know why you re-mortgaged and what any additional borrowing was used for ... because some people borrow against their homes to pay off debt, buy new cars, holidays etc ... and there's no reason why the taxpayer should contribute towards those items.
