Don't think you can get it on the NHS. I have been seeing a private one recently in the SE. The first consulation was about £80 ( including Xrays) for about 40 mins and then £38 for about 20mins after that. Seems steep time wise but it has been sort of working for me. I always fell better after seeing him- the issue is to maintain it and it is worth getting a book on the ALexander Technique as that looks at causes and prevention more deeply.

The key i think is to go regularly. I went twice a week for 2 weeks then onec of week for 3, now i am up to every 3 weeks. My chiropractor thinks i will just need to come every 3/6 months in a litlle while. A bit like visiting the dentist.

The chiropractor I go to every couple of years or so charges between £30 and £40 for an hour's treatment. They reckon to sort most problems with 3 or 4 treatments, and that certainly has been the case for me (and friends who also go there). They then recommend 6-monthly check up appointments, but I must admit I only tend to go when I have a problem! So generally costs about £120 for me to get sorted. HTH.

I had bother with my back last year and was off work for 6 weeks. I had to wait 3 weeks to get Physio at our local clinic.

The same problem returned last week and I was advised by a friend to try a Chiropractor.

Phoned on Wednesday, got an appointment for Thursday (Free Spinal Check),went back Friday for an x ray (£110). Had my first treatment Monday and felt the difference (£32). Will be going today and Friday + 3 days next week. It is going to cost a bit of money but he says he can sort it.

The point is I'm not having to suffer the way I did last year and hopefully get long term relief.

It's a shame we couldn't get the same quick treatment on NHS.

Hope you manage to see someone soon.

Be careful - I saw a chiropractor years ago for a bad back and he made it infinitely worse. I collapsed after one session and was in bed with Valium injections for 3 days.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

I am having difficulties following a course of physiotherapy so nothing is 100% safe.

I am considering osteopathy now but worried about something else going wrong. I definitely need someone to put me right though.
  • I pay £31 for a Chiropractor appointment about every 3 months or as and when required. In case of a relapse I can get an appointment the same day with the person I see regularly; if he is not at the clinic I usually attend I can see him if I'm prepared to travel to another one. They fax the notes between clinics. Otherwise one of his colleagues will see me.

I find it worth the money. A GP will refer you for NHS physio but there is usually a long waiting list.

If you don't have a personal recommendation chose from a practisioner who is listed in the British Chiropractic Association box under Chiropractors in Yellow pages.

The Chiropractor will expect to answer your questions about his/her qualification, ongoing professional training etc. If possible choose a clinic that has several Chiropractors.

You may be be offered a free assessment during Back Care Week, don't remember when it is.

I've had low-key, minor niggles in my back for a few years now. When it gets worse i go to the GP who sends me to a physio who has a go for a bit and maybe makes it better (but doesn't solve the problem). Then I am discharged. A few months later it is bad again and i go back to the GP and so the process goes on time after time. I eventually saw a consultant at the hospital who basically just told me to take pain killers indefinitely and referred me to a physio (again!). There's no chiropractor on the NHS where i live although I don't know if other Trusts offer it.

Someone recommened a chiropractor to me and i decided to give it a go to get of the merry-go-round that the GP/Physio/consultant have had me on. I can't believe how much it has helped. I am so, so pleased i decided to give it a go. I had to pay £50 first off for an in-depth 'medical', discussion with the chiro and for the first treatment. Then It's £27 per treatment. At first i went twice a week (for a fortnight) then weekly for a few weeks, then monthly. Now I go about every 7-8 weeks. It was a bit pricey initially but she has worked wonder for my back. I don't begrudge £27 every 8 weeks because i can really feel the benefit. Would be cheaper if the NHS did it, but since they don't I'm happy to pay £27 to avoid the GP/consultant appointments and avoid having to take too many pain killers.

When i first went the chiro was most surprised i was paying for my treatment as most people have it paid for them through work, insurance companies, private health schemes etc. Do you have private health insurance?

if you have a Chiropractic College nearby you can often get 'cheap' appointments from final year medical students doing their practical work. they are normally accompanied by tutors to guide and observe them. From memory we paid about £10-15 per hour for my wife and about £6 for our 12 month old to be seen. Sorted out their problems within a few sessions

I was seeing a chiropractor for about a year, ended up costing me about £2k, The waiting list to get Physio on the NHS was 19 weeks.
I my case the physio worked better for me, I only need 6 visits, hav'nt really had a problem since.

It all depends what is wrong with your back, if it is causing you pain book in to see one but also go see your doctor see what your opitions are on the nhs.

    God Luck.
