Home alone and can't lock the back door...
Pipsqueek
I'm a long-term forum member and contributor to this board posting under a pseudonym as a security precaution. Ive posted this over in the Arms too so apologies to anyone coming across it twice.
Mr Pipsqueek has gone away for the weekend and called me to say he's accidently taken the back door keys with him, I don't have a spare and the door is unlocked.
I'm not a nervy person or massive security freak but as bedtime draws near I'm growing increasingly anxious about leaving the door unlocked all night. I've tried to find something solid to wedge under the handle (its a upvc mortice lock door opens outwards) but nothing is tall enough,
Any suggestions or reassuring words anyone please?
Thanks

Opens outwards? That complicates it a bit.
I'm always forgetting to lock the back door, the front door, the patio doors or various combinations thereof. Sometimes I forget to shut them.
It's not something I would recommend, but I've never had any problems.
I doubt you will either.0 -
Tying it with a rope or string any good?0

If it opens outwards it would be hard to stop it from opening. But what you could do is just tie some string to the handle with a load of pots etc on the side. This would at least make a loud bang when the door opened and would scare most people away and alert yourself.
Or could you not place a normal dining table chair back under the handle, then stack with yellow pages/phone books to increase the height and sit it snugly under the handle.
Get some more keys cut when he returns. Some people bury a set in the garden for emergencies.0 -
Opens outwards - broom handle or similar across the door, tied with rope to the handle, will make it more difficult to turn the handle and much more difficult to open the door.
A stack of saucepans is also a good idea. You can also get battery powered door alarms from pound-shops etc.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
can you unscrew the handle on the outside?0

well, ive left it open many times accidentaly and everything has been fine.
I know this isn't the best money saving tip, but maybe leave a light or tv on, so it looks like someone is awake.0 -
Light on in another roomand rope the two inside handles together,

Hope you're safe and well.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
