Yeah I think it must need changing "class" back to normal. However because the new insurance documents will be "in the post" i fear they won't give me a new tax disc until I get this.
I'll let you know what the DVLA say.

You can't. It's illegal to drive a car without displaying a valid tax disc. In the real world the police officer that stops you might be understanding and let you off, but it's up to you whether you want to take that risk.0 -
As there is no valid tax on vehicle then it must remain off road until you have displayed the correct tax disc.
To re-tax you will need to do so at your local DVLA office in person or by post, due to the fact that there is a change of taxation class.
You will need:
- V5C (logbook) or V5C/2 new keeper's supplement (green slip)
- Insurance
- MOT (if applicable)
- V10 form to tax - downloadable from https://www.direct.gov.uk/motoring , from Post Office or they have them at DVLA office.
- Payment for tax.
Quickest way to do is to go to DVLA office and it will be done over the counter. If you can't get there then postal applications take 5 working days.
To be honest, the trader really should have advised you of this, especially if as you say he deals with ex-police cars! If your local DVLA office is miles away you could always ask the dealer to go for you to re-tax it as most dealer's go there weekly to sort things out.
If you do go yourself, don't take the car!! The DVLA office car parks are prime places for people being fined for non-display of a tax disc! (I'm ex-DVLA)

The police do not pay for their tax. They pay zero tax.
The only reason they show a tax disc is purely for public relations and to stop any arguments with members of the public who feel they have been hard done by and would probably take exception to the fact if a police vehicle wasn't taxed.
Army vehicles do not show any tax but because Army vehicles are not involved in prosecuting people then the general public accept that.0
