I don't know how they would be better equiped than Freecycle to stop this. On any site of this sort, you are likely to find someone abusing it. It would be very difficult to prove.
If someone reports another member for doing this, how would the mods prove that it wasn't only a personal disagreement that had spilled over to the site? At the end of the day, it would be one persons word against another. If the mods acted on just one report, they could end up banning someone for nothing. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

All of the moderators on DontDumpThat have a central forum where they can share their experiences and information. It just helps people keep a lookout for this sort of thing and be able to see the warning signs.
Like you say, no one could ever be banned purely on suspicion of this kind of thing so its difficult so what more can we do than keep an eye on users?
Receiving an item and then reselling it is actually not against the rules of DDT as long as it is within their deffinition of "indirect reselling" i.e.
"receiving a gifting from a Don'tDumpThat member, and then repairing, refurbishing, exercising some skill or investing other materials (added value) to make that item resaleable or reusable. By repairing or refurbishing the item the member is keeping that item out of landfill and should be entitled to a fair return for the investment of his skill and material costs in returning that item to re-circulation."
Don't lose faith Wishingonastar. At the end of the day, you gave away something that you had no use for and was possibly cluttering up your house. This person saved it from going into landfill which is great!! Okay so they made some money off it when there might have been someone else who could have had it and actually used it, but there are bad apples in every bunch!

It wasn't me that posted about the item that was sold. It was wishingonastar. I haven't lost any faith in these kind of schemes. I have 2 very busy Freecycle groups right on my doorstep, and use these regularly.
I was only questioning how your site had any more control over this sort of behaviour than any of the other sites like this. I think for anyone that uses sites like these, you have to accept there will be a very small minority that will use them to aquire goods to sell (whether on a market stall, or Ebay). It may not be in the true spirit of these schemes, but like you said, at least it keeps stuff out of the landfill. If I found anyone selling an item I'd offered. I wouldn't let them have anything else. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
