Free everything

Thats right, within reason you can get anything you want for free and all you have to do is visit

www.dontdumpthat.com

Its the British version of Freecycle but is forum based rather than the (IMHO) rubbish Yahoo groups.

It is quite new but forums are springing up all over so have a look if there is one near to you.

If not then why not start one, there wasn't one near to me to I started one a week ago. Its quite tough to get your forum established (now I know how Martin feels) but its worth it.

Can you post in two different boards? There seems to be two in my area and I would like to put a thing up for a parrot cage because he daspreatly needs on after having a parrot dumped on him.

    Thanks

What the whole "freecycle"/dontdumpit/recycling schemes like this really need is a dedicated site.... with everything built in; rather than forums or yahoo groups. The yahoo groups get scarily messy.... especially with the daily digests, it can be hard to see whats already taken etc. And it also limits places quite alot... if you want to see if theres anything in a few areas you need to be a member of a few groups. That really limits the potential of the idea.
Personally I haven't used forums, but having the same principle of the the yahoo groups (which are really just essentially forums) I'm sure they'd have the same problems.

A dedicated site means you could for example, have it where when you post an offered, you can have it so you can make as taken pending collection, collected etc... so that its all in one place. I see that forums would make it easier to see what has been taken though! a dedicated site could be searchable by things such as location, or perhaps delievery method... so perhaps say you really would like a certain magazine issue that in theory could be posted, you could have a nationwide search for that. *nods*, could still have forums for intergrated chat.... so you can keep the social aspect. Perhaps you could even have ratings of members, or some form of feedback system... to prevent offering things to people who constantly say they will collection something but fail to turn up consistantly. Or maybe if someone turned out to be a muderous psycho... you could leave them feedback warning everyone else. And of course, brilliant feedback for those great people. Okay, I'm just babbling now. Perhaps I've just come up with a great pre-university summer holiday project for myself. Though free-cycle is so well established I doubt it'd be used.

    Some good ideas Diminutive.

In reply, I would say that IMO, the forums style of DDT is much better as you say.

On Freecycle, the messages are linear and so you have to check them all and match them up to see whats available and whats gone. Not easy when there are lots of members and lots of messages.

On Don'tDumpThat all messages about the same items are clumped together so you can see how much interest there has been, if anyone has taken it etc. Plus the "Wanted" and "Offered" are split and then again into categories and then all searchable so its EASY to find stuff.

Finally, there is an option on the homepage to go to a "national" forum like you suggest. I think this might be a good idea like you say for magazines that could be posted. Only problem I see with that is most people on there don't have 1 magazine, they have hundreds and they want rid of them all in one go asap. I doubt most people would want to post individually over a long time period!

    Good thoughts though!!!

  • i'm annoyed with freecycle/this sort of recycling, at the moment, due to an item i offered and gave away being sold on a market stall in a nearby town. at least the seller looked ashamed, but its disheartened me from it all. this person has applied for everything i've offered, you think someone would pick up on it. i want my stuff to go to people it'll help, not make a profit from. i could do that myself.

Don't want to over sell DontDumpThat or anything, but another reason why it is better than Freecycle. There are strict rules against this sort of thing and better equipped mods to keep an eye on this sort of thing.
