I have been looking for blueberry bushes as my daughter loves them and eats tons!

I have seen them cheap in wilkos but I am impatient and cannot wait a year for them to fruit!

I then found mature ones in a garden centre but they were £19.99 each and as I believe you need two I will not stretch to that much incase I kill it!

So as the question says can anyone point me in the right direction for cheaper ones that will fruit this year please?

i did look into this a lot last year and found its really a case of cheap or mature not both.............having said that i now have 3 good size bushes one was £10 form the reduced plants section at the garden centre the other 2 were from B&Q and were £7.99 each, generally a bush that is producing in quantity will be upwards of £15 including the postage etc I suppose its due to the length of time they take to mature and the resulting space they take up in the nursery....I would recommend the B&Q bushes though they were really heavy croppers and tasty too.....

Thanks I will check out B&Q 1st as I always prefer to be able to touch something when I buy it but if thats no good then I will buy from vanmeuwen as that is a fab price. I am very happy now!

I dont think all varieties absolutely need partners to fruit, i have 3 bushes because i wanted to extend my season.....one is a mid season the other a late one and my recent bargain from the garden centre is a bit of a mystery as the label was gone! :D

i took a look at the vanmeuwen site and the plants are really pretty small, a plant that is only 15cm tall wont produce more than a few berries and certainly not the yield that was in the photo!! the B&Q bushes i have are over 2ft tall now and have been potted on to maybe 35cm (?) pots this year and at £7.99 they produced a lot of fruit last year........i would definitely go for them if they have them....

Do you need 2 top hat plants for them to fruit? Or are they a self-fertile variety?

    Thanks!

Lidl had cheap young berry plants this year, 3 for a £5 IIRC, but that doesn`t help you now. They do this every year.

All blueberries are self-fertile, but apparently they are more likely to produce more fruit if more than one is planted. I have two in pots (by accident - I had four but two died suddenly a year ago) and they have produced really well this year but they are different varieties.
