What does an MOT actually test for?

Options
Mine is booked in for the end of the month at a council run place.

Unless it's something I cannot see and check - I'm hopeful it will get through.

I have booked it in for a full service elsewhere about a week before the MOT using my Clubcard Deals.

But what can I check for now? Can the emissions be checked during a service as part of the service and at no extra cost?

If your car's being serviced beforehand then just ask the garage to check for any potential MOT problems - it's usually things like worn bushes, mountings etc. - easily visible to anyone with a bit of car knowledge, & the servicing should check blown bulbs, low tyres etc. (though you should be checking these sorts of things yourself anyway ;-) ). If your car's less than 10 years or so old, then servicing should sort out any emission problems - they're often only down to poor maintenance

MOT is mainly a safety and emissions test. The back of a Haynes manual shows a list of the checks.
Personally I just chuck my car into the MOT and see what it fails on.
    Happy chappy
