in Energy
I have just bought my first place - unfortunately there is a prepayment electricty meter in there at the moment, but a normal gas meter.
Both are EDF Energy.
I have taken the gas reading.
I have just gone through a system online with NPower and the National Trust to switch my energy from EDF to them. I like the idea of it being green and earth friendly.
I have received an email from them stating it will be a month before I will switch.
In the meantime what do I do?
There is a key in the meter at the moment, and apparently it's into emergency credit.
Then there is a new key in a envelope with a letter dated 20th March for the new occupier.
Trouble is the last owner didn't move out until the 29th... so is the letter for her or me?
God I am confused, never had to deal with these companies before and feel I perhaps shouldn't have switched suppliers?
Do I now need to ring EDF and tell them I am the new owner? And do I tell them about the the switch or just left that to NPower/Nat Trust?
Thanks in advance!

When you moved in you should have contacted EDF to tell them you are the new occupier, you will owe them money and will have to settle any outstanding bill with them.
Green tariffs are a con to get you to pay more than you have to for your energy, and as you know there is no such thing as 'Green' gas.
Not wishing to cause panic or alarm but N-Power have the worst customer service reputation in the industry. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
YES you should call EDF.and tell them you are the new occupier,
ensure you give them a meter reading (plus make sure you keep a copy for your own records)
as far as switching to npower,
you have only applied to switch, they will not switch you for around 6 weeks, when they send a new key,
Right now you are most likelly in a "cooling off period" (of 7/14 days) before the contract starts and most suppliers usually write/email to confirm what their prices and terms and conditions are before they instegate the switchover and send out their new key,
hope this helps0 -

I haven't moved in yet, doing that on Monday - so won't owe them any money. Gas is all off at the moment.
Well I have applied to switch so will have to see how I get on!0 -

You cannot apply to switch away from EDF until you have first contacted EDF and become their customer. If so your switch will fail and cause delay.
Cancel the switch, then contact EDF the day you move in and take the meter readings. As soon as you get EDF's confirmation that your account with them is set up, you can then apply to switch, will will take 4-6 weeks.
PS: as already advised, there is no such thing as a 'green' gas supplier. It's just marketing hype. If you want to give some money to the NT, give it direct. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Good luck with your moving in today.
However you are responsible for bills from the day you became responsible for the property, i.e. in your case from the day you completed on the purchase.
That may or may not make any difference to the units recorded (depending on whether the last occupier has left anything turned on), but there may be a daily standing charge to pay.
...and as others said, you can't switch supplier until you have a supplier."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
