panasonic plasma tv on ebay

Hi

I just wondered if anyone knew if this tv is any good. Ours is packing up on us and we are looking to get another one. I didn't want to buy a plasma tv but my OH has seen one on ebay for £300 to buy outright.
The model type is:-

panasonic th-42pe40b 42" plasma tv

Any thoughts on it would be much appreciated. It does say pick up from Doncaster and this is where we live.

Why not ask the seller if you can go along and have a look at it?
  • dont think it is the full 1080p HD version, so dont think the picture quality is all that great to be honest.

take a look at some reviews etc online to get a wider perspective ;~)

This model is more than 4 years old, so technology will have moved on loads since it was new.

Are you set on having a 42''? I got a decent 32'' LCD Samsung from Amazon for just over £300 (they're down to £296 now).

I have a Samsung LED, the picture is far better than LCD but use far less energy than either plasma or LCD.

But far more expensive at the moment. It also depends on the TV the input feed etc. Picture quality isn't just the tv

Get yourself down to your local general auctions. They sell about 40 every week at mine. You can mess about with them to your heart's content the day before.

    Hi

Thanks for all your comments. First, yes bcl999 we have left a message asking if we can go and have a look. Just waiting for a reply.

Luckymoneysaver, I didn't have much luck on the net, didn't seem to be any reviews, not where I was looking anyway!

Jackieb, I had an idea it must be about 5 years old going on the number, I couldn't find any more starting with the same numbers. No it doesn't have to be a 42" at all. We have a 28" now so anything above is ok actually.
You said you got a decent 32'' LCD Samsung from Amazon for just over £300 (they're down to £296 now). Thanks we can look into that too.

    Firefox,

Can I ask what the difference between all three are please? Why do you say BUT use far less energy etc.

cyberbob, are you saying LED are more expensive than the other two?

macfly, I didn't know we had any local general auctions!!! I take it I would find out where these are on the net?

You have all given me pause for thought. Great.

    Thanks

LCD TV's can only display 16.7 million colours. The ones they can't display natively, they fool you into believing they can by rapidly switching between two colours that when flicked-between fast enough give the viewer the impression that they are seeing the correct colour. LCD sets can struggle to produce pure blacks, and those that do then struggle to produce pure whites.
LCD's can also suffer from a ghosting effect especcially when viewing fast-moving HD images (my friends top of the range Samsung is terrible for this)

LED panels use small LEDs behinf every LCD cell to provide a backlight. Normal LCD sets use 2 cold cathode tubes, these take 15 minutes to reach full working temperature and therefore optimum picture quality.

Plasma Tvs can produce an almost infinite number of colours, but can struggle with bright whites. They can sufer from 'burn-in' if left displaying the same picture dor a long time (but this usually disappears after a week or two). Plasma sets usually have extremely high refresh rates & give a superbly sharp picture with no ghosting or blurring. The downside to Plasma sets is the running costs, they produce a lot of heat.
One thing you need to know is that you MUST transport plasma screens in an upright possition, not lying flat. I thought this was a myth, but according to my local dealer you can do a lot of damage to it.
