Interesting piece I found about the volcanic ash.....
"Evidence appears to show below 10,000ft three layers of volcanic residue over East Anglia and the southern North Sea. A lower fine level in the order of 1,000ft-4,000ft; a mid level sulphurous chemical layer at around 6,500ft, and a higher level of coarser particles around 8,000ft.
The density and edges of these layers appear hard to predict, whilst levels clearly reach values with potential to be hazardous to aircraft. This is particularly significant in the context of the invisibility of these layers to normal aircraft instrumentation."
A few other snippets for your information:
- We had a stormscope and weather radar on the Dornier, neither saw a thing.
- About 50% of the time we could just see the layer when we were in it, the other 50% we couldn't.
- It was almost impossible to work out what sort of concentrations were above or below us.
- The sulphurous level could be smelled very clearly in the cabin, and our gas-phase chemistry specialist tells me that we'll have had significant quantities of sulphuric acid in there as well.
- We just don't know what's above 10,000ft at the moment, but should do after tomorrow.
- We're flying again once tomorrow (Sunday) then probably 2-3 times per day until it's all over.
- Yes, we are boroscoping the engines between flights!Debt-free...and staying that way...0
